when you time how long it takes for someone to tell you the captital of a state. they will know the captitals of state nearby the ones previously asked. This seems to be because perhaps the brain orginizes things geographically.

So if you ask for the capitial of TN you will know the capital of kentucky more quickly. it primes your mind.

only since around 1950 has basic knowledge of the brain been in existnce.

a lot of inital work as done on the giant axon of a squid.

Hebb's rule : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hebbian_learning

Let us assume that the persistence or repetition of a reverberatory activity (or “trace”) tends to induce lasting cellular changes that add to its stability.… When an axon of cell A is near enough to excite a cell B and repeatedly or persistently takes part in firing it, some growth process or metabolic change takes place in one or both cells such that A's efficiency, as one of the cells firing B, is increased.

Handy Slogan “Neurons that fire together wire together”

Hopfield Memory

  • Knowledge is stored in the connections.
  • distributed (“holographic”)
    • every pattern is stroed in every location (weight)
  • Robust
    • correct retrevlal in spite of noise or error in patternrs
      • what are the limits of this?
    • correct operation in spite of considerable weight damage or noise
